A growing popularity has led to a severe court shortage for basketball across the state. As a key step in addressing this crisis, Basketball Queensland (BQ) has invested $150,000 in ten member associations through the second round of its Facilities Project Accelerator Fund.
The Unprecedented Growth Challenge
Basketball participation in Queensland has grown dramatically by 96% in the past five years. This exponential growth has put huge pressure on existing venues, creating serious capacity issues.
BQ’s latest Facilities Strategy paints a worrying picture:
- An urgent shortage of 223 courts has been identified across the state.
- As a result, more than 10,000 young people are on waiting lists and unable to play their favourite sport.
Basketball Queensland CEO, Joshua Pascoe, underscored the severity of the situation. “Our primary challenge is one of access,” Pascoe stated. “It is imperative that we get more Queenslanders active now instead of sitting at home unable to access their sport of choice. This funding is an essential, pre-emptive step.”
Strategic Investment for Future Development
This accelerator funding will not be used for direct construction, but rather for critical planning and advocacy work. These tasks are a critical early step in the development lifecycle. Each recipient association will receive up to $15,000 to fund key pre-development documents.
These include:
- Feasibility Studies
- Concept Designs
- Business Cases
- Site Analysis
- Advocacy Documents
Pascoe explains that these professional studies are essential. They will lay the groundwork needed to secure significant government or council funding for new courts or facility upgrades. He adds, “This funding helps associations take the necessary next steps… so that they are ready when major funding opportunities arise.â€

Ten associations, stretching from the Fraser Coast to the state’s metropolitan areas, received equal grants to advance their projects:

Hervey Bay Basketball President Matthew Baker stressed the local impact, saying the funding is a “major step towards ensuring more members and families are welcomed to the Fraser Coast to enjoy the game of basketball.”
Southwest Metro Pirates General Manager Mika Vukona said the support “empowers us to develop local talent, increase community engagement and create a stronger, more inclusive sporting environment.”
